My evolving White Noise series of paintings and collages explores the complexities of communications
symbols that permeate our lives and shape our perceptions. These works address the multilayered barrage of
messages that we content with in contemporary society.
Each piece is layered with diverse images and, at times, highly esoteric forms that can be either decipherable
or indecipherable depending on the viewer's background, experience, and point of view. Juxtaposed bits and pieces
of communicative systems such as scientific charts, astrological and wind patternings, dance steps, codes, music
maps, cautions signs, eye tests, and sea currents make up the work. Simply, there is interplay between seeing and
this "sea" of information that threatens to inundate us.
I have attempted to make a complex set of metaphors to challenge the authority of verbal language and to question
its communicative boundaries. With these visually compacted works, I strive for another kind of communication where
a poetic dynamic is felt before the content is understood. The visual pleasure from the abundance of massed
surfaces, symbolizing the ubiquity of modern technology, also becomes metaphoric for the danger of engulfment.
I seek to present the question.
